About the Project
The Gods Are Not To Blame is one of the most celebrated works of African theatre. Written by Nigerian playwright Ola Rotimi, it reimagines the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex within Yoruba culture, exploring universal questions of destiny, leadership, power and responsibility. As part of Utopia Theatre's Research & Development process, we are bringing together a community cast to work alongside professional artists in an exciting period of creative exploration. This workshop audition is your opportunity to become part of that journey. We are looking for people who are curious, committed and excited to collaborate. Whether you have previous performance experience or are stepping into a rehearsal room for the first time, we want to hear from you. The Research & Development process will culminate in a public sharing in November 2026, helping to shape a future full-scale production.

A powerful retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth set during the civil wars of 19th-century Yorubaland.
General Aderemi, fresh from saving the kingdom from invaders is promoted to Field Marshall, thus fulfilling the prophecy of the oracle. When the oracle says he will become King, Aderemi and his wife Oyebisi go on a bloody mission to ensure he sits on the throne.
